Longshot is a genetically engineered slave from the extradimensional planet Mojoworld, a land dominated by beings known as the "Spineless Ones." An extensive Lotus Elise Review
With my birthday coming around the corner, and after finding myself constantly browsing through Elise listings, I decided to rent one to see once and for all what the car is all about.
I have a few disclaimers that I would like to add.
I have spent extensive time with the following vehicles: C5 Corvette, C7 Corvette Grand Sport, C8 Corvette Z51, Alfa Romeo 4C, 718 Porsche Cayman Base, 997 Porsche 911 Turbo, Lotus Evora, Ford Focus RS, Tesla Model 3 AWD, Audi R8 V8, and Audi TTRS. I will be forming my opinion with this pantheon of vehicles in mind.
I find that a lot of Elise reviews focus too much on the car’s uniqueness and don’t do a good job of explaining how the car stacks up to other vehicles. While I won’t be doing an in-depth comparison per say, I do want to try to illustrate what this car might mean for other enthusiasts who have experienced other vehicles already. In other words I’m not going to go “Oh my god the trunk is so small” every YouTube review says that already. I’m going to really try to focus on the intangibles that don’t get highlighted in magazine or YouTube reviews.
As somebody who owned a C5 Corvette, C7 Grandsport, and currently daily drives a Tesla Model 3 power was a major concern for me when driving the Elise. The car only has a 190HP engine with around 130LB/Ft of torque. Yes it is in a 2000lb-ish body which gives it a good power to weight ratio but that’s still not a whole lot of power on paper.
The good news is that the Elise’s engine is strong enough to give you a very satisfying time in the car. On paper, you will not get a fast 0-60 time but in practice you get to ride a nice wave of torque, feel the car accelerating and responding rapidly, and in general you feel like you have plenty of power available to you.
There is very little noise insulation so the engine (in particular the exhaust) is very present inside the cabin. This makes the car feel very responsive as throttle inputs are immediately heard and with the car being so light you almost feel small engine and exhaust vibrations in the cabin. A lot of people characterize this as “connectiveness” or “communication” when describing the Elise. But you really kind of just feel like you’re strapped in with this living breathing engine that’s ready to rock and roll. Our particular rental did have an aftermarket exhaust of somesort which I am sure helped this experience but even without one I do not think the experience is much different on a stock Elise.
I want to be clear, I’ve driven quite a few other mid-engine cars. So this isn’t “oh the engine is behind me this is awesome” no other car I’ve been in, including the Alfa Romeo 4C and Lotus Evora, quite makes the presence of the engine felt like the Elise does.
The car is also incredibly satisfying to down shift. It gladly blips with authority and a little bit of ferocity and essentially says to you “Let’s effing go!”
Lastly there’s the rev range. The car revs out to right around 8000-8500RPM. As you accelerate it continues to get louder, more intense, and it builds in speed. Then right around 6000RPM the second cam kicks in (Toyota VTec bro!) and it’s like a times two multiplier for the ferocity and intensity that the car has.
The first time we hit the second cam when driving the car we literally said to ourselves “holy crap!” as it was honestly one of the most satisfying things I’ve experienced in a vehicle. So many cars just program a cool little exhaust burble, or they just get louder as they hit redline, but I’ve never experienced “more power, more sound, more intensity” in such a dramatic jump just a few thousand RPMs below redline. It’s way cooler than turbo boost coming on, and way more authentic than an exhaust “clap” when shifting at redline.
So is the Elise a powerful car? No not necessarily, but you also don’t feel like you are driving around in an underpowered econobox that just looks cool by any means. It’s properly racy, spirited, and satisfying in its power delivery and this is from someone who floors his Tesla daily between stoplights.
I also wanted to mention that the exhaust note sounds fantastic in person. Now again, we did have an aftermarket exhaust so results may vary slightly. But a lot of YouTube videos make the Elise sound a little ricey and in real life it very much sounds more like a racecar…and is totally acceptable for somebody like me who is used to the roar of a smallblock V8.
The only negative on the power side is that the car feels a little less authoritative on the highway. You can still get yourself to a high passing speed surprisingly quickly but you don’t quite have the “oomph” on tap that you would with a larger engine.
The handling on the Elise as expected is very good, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s as miraculous as some reviews make it seem. It is really just a showcase of mechanical handling done right and working really really well.
In canyon carving the car loaded up appropriately with grip, was very agile in changing directions, and was generally confidence inspiring. However, despite how well the car communicates to you, there is the knowledge in the back of your mind that it doesn’t have too many driver’s aids to bail you out, so you do hold back a bit or dis-engage from the fun more quickly because once you hit your mechanical limits that’s it there’s nothing else to save you or bail you out.
I think the term canyon carving is used a lot when talking about driving and in the Elise the term feels 10X more proper as you almost feel like you are surfing through a canyon with how agile it is. The more technical your route, switchbacks and hairpin turns especially, the more the Elise will awe and reward you. In sweeping canyons where power can trump handling, the Elise feels less in its element and has much less to dazzle you with, but is still a hoot to drive.
The unpowered steering is very direct and obviously communicates more than what you would experience in hydraulic and electric steering racks. Compared to the Alfa Romeo 4C’s unpowered column the Elise’s certainly feels more accurate, precise, and consistently controllable, but it’s not like the 4C has a far worse steering rack lack some reviews describe. I experienced this when driving the Alfa Romeo 4C and I think it holds true for the Elise as well. While these cars are incredibly light, and can do great things with their handling...you do have to muscle the steering wheel appropriately. As a result there were times when I’d want to be a bit sharper on a turn and simply couldn’t because I didn’t have the proper input on the steering wheel. The car can do it no doubt, but the limiting factor is literally human input on the steering wheel. So it’s interesting because you know the car can do some stupid things with the handling, but you can’t ever do it because you physically won’t be able to move the wheel properly to make that happen. The tradeoff to this however is the fact every movement of the steering wheel feels fun and engaging.
The damping on the Elise is interesting. You do feel quite a few bumps that you pass over but it’s almost welcome and never feels harsh. You also do feel a lot of suspension movement, which can feel a little unsettling at first, but you get used to it. It’s a hard sensation to describe, but most cars generally feel very level when you drive them and you simply go up and down when you encounter road imperfections, and maybe the back-end will kick out if you’re being stupid with the throttle. On the Elise you almost feel lateral movement in the suspension travel, so you’re going up and down, but also a little to the side depending on the road imperfection. You get used to it and it doesn’t exactly compromise your confidence in the car, but it’s a level of detail I just have never experienced.
As a whole, I’d say the Elise’s handling is impressive because it’s a light car, with well-sized tires, proper damping, and a great geometry. It’s very good to me, and I think anyone will love and enjoy it, but it’s not exactly physics defying like some folks make it out to be. If you would like to experience physics defying handling try an Evora. It’s a magic carpet ride that somehow also feels communicative and sporty, and it also pulls off stupidly difficult turns without hesitation.
To me the Elise is like a classical pianist who is good because he practices 10 hours a day and has focused on nothing but music for his entire life. Whereas the Evora is the prodigy that is innately talented and no one quite knows how and why he plays as well as he does without practice.
I personally think the Lotus Elise looks incredible. It is aggressive without looking too mean or angry, it has beautiful curves without feeling too soft, and it literally looks good from every angle. Now I will say that I think the car looks a little better in photographs than it does in person…don’t get me wrong it’s still striking and amazing to look at in person, but to me it doesn’t quite convey the same energy that some photos of the car can present.
What I do like about the design is that it is very functional. All of the vents are real and if you look at them from the right angle you can see things like the radiator or bits of the engine below. Likewise you can add just about every possible track/race oriented piece to the car and they will feel cohesive on the car and not just some boy-racer add-ons. Seriously there’s pics of Elise’s with dive planes, side skits, extensive front and rear splitters, big wings, and the car still looks genuine and beautiful…not cheap fake racer.
The interior of the car gets a lot of attention for being very Spartan and minimalist, but I honestly really liked it. Yes there’s exposed aluminum everywhere, but the aluminum honestly looks, feels, and sounds pretty cool. The AC controls felt solid to the touch, as did the powered window controls, and door handles. Our vehicle didn’t have cupholders (but there’s ways to get them), nor is there a proper glovebox, but there is a storage net between the two seats which you can put your essentials in.
What’s interesting to me is the minimalist interior has almost made this vehicle timeless. If you look at say a Cayman from 2005 or a C6 Corvette both interiors look aged, likely have materials that are falling apart, their entertainment systems feel ancient etc. The Elise is basically aluminum and some hard-ish synthetic materials throughout the cabin so despite being old…there isn’t a whole lot of things that can actually show age so it holds up really well!
Now the car does squeak and rattle, and at around 80mph we did start to experience some windleaks coming through the windows. But everything in the Elise feels so mechanical…the gear box clanks as you use the shifter, the engine is very present in the cabin, and your body causes small aluminum pings by just being in the cabin…that you don’t really mind the squeaks and rattles.
This is something that I think a lot of reviewers miss when they talk about the Elise. Yes it does make all sorts of noises but in this car that’s honestly a feature and part of the experience. If I was in a Cayman, Evora, or Corvette and heard the noises that the Elise made I’d be all sorts of upset because those are cars that pretend that they’re somewhat luxurious. So when you hear squeaks, rattles, etc. it really detracts from the “luxury GT” story that say a Cayman is trying to tell. But the Elise is a stripped down sports car that makes you feel like you’re in a racecar for the road…so you totally don’t care about the imperfect noises it makes.
I want to go on record in saying that I find the Elise’s build quality to be better than the build quality of the C5 Corvette that I owned. Now I think the Elise is a simpler car so there’s less flaws to notice in some ways…likewise its more hardcore nature does skew perception a bit. But for instance on the highway the Elise’s squeaks and rattles felt far less intrusive than those of my C5 Corvette. The window regulators also felt like they were much better designed, and I almost prefer the Elise’s roof mounting system (despite it using screws and taking longer to take on and off) because it feels much more solid than the C5’s targa hooks and clips.
The car does feel fragile though…it’s not German “solid” by any means and I intrinsically found myself trying to be very gentle with it. The actual cabin feels pretty beefy thanks to its aluminum tub it’s really the fiberglass exterior that exudes the fragile feel. Likewise with all of the mechanical sounds that you hear you kind of get a sense that something will snap and break at somepoint…and that’s not exactly something you experience in other vehicles.
I found ergonomics to be great. The steering wheel (which isn’t adjustable) is perfectly placed. It also fits in your hand really well, looks sporty, and is one of the best steering wheels I’ve experienced in a car. Unlike most other mid-engine vehicles, you can see out the back and the B-pillar doesn’t introduce massive insurmountable blindspots. The seats are fixed tilt and the driver only has forward back adjustment but you can fit in the seats well and will generally get used to them. I also found the cabin to be pretty spacious as someone who is about 6’ and 160lbs. I can definitely see larger people having a hard time in this car…especially two larger people in the cabin…but I don’t think it’s quite as tight or bad as people make it out to be by any means.
Almost every review I’ve read basically says “forget about the radio” partially because the engine can be so loud, and partially because the sound system is pretty poor. Our rental had a (4) speaker Alpine system that might have been aftermarket…but if it were it would be an affordable thing to buy and to me the system totally sounded fine. You’re not going to get a perfect sonic experience with great low-end and a distinct mid to high-end sound stage. But you’ll be able to hear your tunes over the engine and will be able to experience your music in a satisfying way as long as you’re okay with the car being present in that music listening experience. I think the Tesla Model 3 has one of the best stock audio systems you can buy and as my daily driver it’s something I very much enjoy. Coming from that experience I could totally enjoy the Elise’s sound system.
A lot of reviews also talk about how bad the A/C is. That it barely blows air. Only keeps the cabin a few degrees cooler than the outside, etc. I was driving the car in about 70-78 degree temps, which were admittedly pretty ideal. I found that the AC worked well. It definitely blew air that was properly cold and the lowest fan setting of 1 felt like it was plenty of circulation. Curiously the car did start blowing hot air for about 15 minutes at one point but aside from that the AC was totally livable. I think the only negative is that the vents are at an odd angle and can’t really be adjusted to hit your face…but it wasn’t the end of the world. I’d say as long as you don’t live in the desert and know that the AC likely won’t handle as well on sunny 90+ temp days for extended periods of time you don’t have much to worry about.
Overall Driving Experience
I think the first thing that stands out about the Elise driving experience is just how visceral it is. Almost every sense is engaged. The engine roars behind you, the car provides constant feedback through its steering rack and suspension, heck you see and feel heat rising from the front windshield as the heat seeps through the radiator siting in the front nose. It’s almost an all encompassing experience and it can be hard to focus on anything but driving when you’re in an Elise.
I think a lot of reviews wrongfully exaggerate this as being brutal and hardcore. While the car can be very intense, it’s definitely not as psycho or impossible to be in as people make it seem. It’s more so a machine that is designed to delight you through a very analog and mechanical driving experience and there’s a beautiful kind of purity to it. A lot of cars nowadays pretend to be “race inspired” but also “luxurious” at the same time. They look and sound aggressive but somehow also feel soft or a little neutered in certain areas. When you’re in an Elise you don’t feel like Lotus held anything back. Yes they didn’t build in a nice interior, great sound system, misc. creature comforts, etc. But they also didn’t purposefully give the car a crappy engine, gearing that was flawed, sluggish handling, etc. I’ve been in a lot of great cars and have walked out going “I kind of wish it pulled a little harder” or “If only the suspension was a little more refined” but you walk away from the Elise feeling really satiated on all levels and you don’t have much to criticize about the actual drive itself.
What’s interesting is you’re not the fastest thing on the road; you don’t have the most impressive exhaust note, etc. But you also don’t need to tell yourself a story to enjoy the car. You’re not having to tell yourself “Oh look at how flirty this Italian car is” “Man this German car is so precise and refined” “This American car is so aggressive” the Lotus just shows you what it can do and because of that you get to be in the moment.
The car is definitely small which has some Pro’s and Con’s. On the pro-side you are very low to the ground, which gives you a strong sensation of speed and a unique perspective in the cockpit. On the negative front you are very aware of how fragile the car is and honestly I feel like you’ll be a goner or seriously injured in just about any kind of at speed collision within this vehicle.
A lot of folks make a big deal about how hard it is to get in and out of the car. It’s definitely not as straightforward as a typical vehicle but if you’re able bodied and not excessively large or tall it’s not that big of a deal. Getting out was more of an ordeal for me than getting in but I think with a little practice I could make the whole process pretty seamless.
Perhaps the only negative about the Elise driving experience is that it is a little draining. After (2) or so hours in the car you feel pretty exhausted, partially because you’re working a bit harder to drive the car with the unpowered steering, etc. but also because your senses get a little overwhelmed. Now don’t get me wrong you love just about every second that you spend in the vehicle, but it’s so engaging that say a 30 minute trip can feel like more of an experience than a (2) hour trip in other vehicles.
Likewise I do feel like once you own an Elise it can be hard to get out of your local bubble. For instance I would love to take this car up the Pacific Northwest from Southern California. But I just can't see how I could traverse long distances with it without being prematurely burnt out.
As a whole I think the Elise provides one of the best driving experiences I have encountered. It doesn’t necessarily nail the numbers, it’s not even overtly emotional, it’s just properly pure and purpose driven and that’s almost impossible to find in other vehicles nowadays.
If you’re looking for the best driving experience for the money the Elise is hard to beat. At $30-$38K it’s a far more compelling sports car than anything you can buy new in the price range. Once you factor in its looks, how it sounds, and the fact that the top comes off you pretty much have a guaranteed smile machine.
Despite the stigma, you can get around town in an Elise pretty well. It’s a little stressful but it’s totally doable. However, because the car is so engaging and is always “on” so to speak I feel like it is best enjoyed as a weekend or fun car with a reliable daily driver always ready to go.
You have to go into an Elise knowing that it’s best enjoyed for the driving experience. You want to find one that functions well…windows go up and down, AC blowing cold air, no blatant mechanical faults, etc. but you’re not going to find one that is squeak or rattle free. Likewise the car is so fragile that I think it’s worth buying one not in perfect aesthetic condition, because stuff IS going to happen to it as you drive it. So you might as well drive it freely without worrying about an inevitable ding or scratch ruining the experience.
These cars are very obviously meant to be enjoyed for the driving experience, not because of how perfect they are. You don’t want to buy this as a statement car to impress everyone on the road. You don’t want to try to make this car “perfect” by fixing every flaw it may have. You want to buy this car so you can escape and derive as much fun on the road as you possibly can in the process.
Is the Elise the ultimate “pure” drivers car? Yes and no! I think the Elise provides the very best of an old-school mechanical driving experience that just isn’t possible with modern vehicles. However I also feel like I had similar levels of fun driving an Alfa Romeo 4C and a Lotus Evora. To me those three vehicles are the best driver’s cars a layman can reasonably obtain with the Porsche Cayman/Boxster being way overhyped lies as “driver’s cars”.
I think the Alfa Romeo 4C is a really good iteration on the Elise for folks who want a tad more power, practicality (like consistent AC, better stereo), and a properly functioning dealer network. However I’m seeing too many 4C’s in the $48K-$60K range when they should really be in the tight $38K-$48K range. If the Italian flair allures you (which it will) it’s not a bad buy by any means.
The Evora pretty much carries the Elise spirit in a package that is much more livable. The Elise is pure mechanical mastery, whereas the Evora is a modern GT car sprinkled with a special Lotus sauce that I can’t quite put my finger on…but it’s really freaking good. Seriously the Evora is the best driver’s car that you can get, with the most unique exotic styling that you won’t have to worry about driving or owning. It’s an amazing package. However, I also think Evoras are a little overpriced right now and every one that I come across feels like it is $5K-$10K more expensive than it should be. Sadly the new Evora’s on the market are just not $100K cars.
There is something about the Elise that really tugs at me though. After driving one you look at cars costing $40-$100K and go “if I have an Elise in my life do I really need to lust over these more expensive cars?” The Elise is almost like a sage who has already reached enlightenment. It sits ever present, always accessible, but it will never call to you. The path towards enlightenment is a decision that only you can make by letting go. If you are able to make that decision the Elise will reward you by showing you the way that so many others blindly fail to see. But you have to be okay with letting go.
