http-conduit with TLS and a custom certificate

I'm trying to write a simple TLS client that is able to connect via HTTP secure to my own service(s). I provide a minimal example on how I'm trying to achieve this and where it fails:
Generating the custom X509 cert
Generate the public certificate (public.crt) and the server's private key (server.pem):
openssl req -new -x509 -keyout server.pem -out public.crt -days 365 -nodes
(Note: I choose localhost as FQDN which is important.)
Hosting a test server locally
To test connecting to TLS-services with self-signed certificates, I created a minimal index.html and run the following Python script:
import BaseHTTPServer, SimpleHTTPServer import ssl httpd = BaseHTTPServer.HTTPServer(('localhost', 4443), SimpleHTTPServer.SimpleHTTPRequestHandler) httpd.socket = ssl.wrap_socket (httpd.socket, keyfile='./server.pem', certfile='./public.crt', server_side=True) httpd.serve_forever()
The service starts without warnings and works well when testing manually with Firefox and with the following Python snippet:
>>> requests.get("https://localhost:4443", verify='path/to/public.crt')
Or the curl way curl --cacert path/to/public.crt https://localhost:4443, hence I'm deducing the server-side is not the issue, but rather my Haskell skills are.
The Haskell client
I'm not set on the libraries, but I'm currently attempting to use http-conduit. Basically, I'm already using the (networking related) dependencies tls, iproute ,dns, wai, warp and would like to keep it as light-weight as possible (so if there's another library that works well without introducing a new cluster of dependencies, I'd appreciate it).
The goal: Create a secure connection to use a HTTPS-webservice (GET and POST with JSON as Content-Type, though I'm currently just testing it for plain text), only one hard-coded, server-side certificate will be used.
My approach: Create a custom Manager that holds my custom CertificateStore that I'm reading with readCertificateStore, set this manager and create a get-request. The code I'm using is:
#!/usbin/env stack -- stack runhaskell --package bytestring --package connection --package http-client --package http-conduit --package tls --package x509-store {-# LANGUAGE OverloadedStrings #-} module Main where import Data.X509.CertificateStore import Network.Connection import Network.HTTP.Client import Network.HTTP.Conduit import Network.HTTP.Simple import Network.TLS import qualified Data.ByteString.Lazy.Char8 as L8 mkManager :: String -> IO Manager mkManager host = do cs <- maybe (error "Couldn't read cert") id <$> readCertificateStore cert let defs = defaultParamsClient host "" clientParams = defs { clientShared = (clientShared defs) { sharedCAStore = cs } } newManager $ mkManagerSettings (TLSSettings clientParams) Nothing where cert = "path/to/public.crt" main :: IO () main = do manager <- mkManager "localhost" let req = setRequestManager manager "https://localhost:4443/" response <- httpLBS req putStrLn $ "The status code was: " ++ show (getResponseStatusCode response) print $ getResponseHeader "Content-Type" response L8.putStrLn $ getResponseBody response
The error message
Executing the above Haskell file gives the following error (the certificate seems to be read properly):
Client.hs: HttpExceptionRequest Request { host = "localhost" port = 4443 secure = True requestHeaders = [] path = "/" queryString = "" method = "GET" proxy = Nothing rawBody = False redirectCount = 10 responseTimeout = ResponseTimeoutDefault requestVersion = HTTP/1.1 } (InternalException (HandshakeFailed (Error_Protocol ("expecting server hello, got alert : [(AlertLevel_Fatal,IllegalParameter)]",True,HandshakeFailure))))
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Or do you have a simpledifferent working solution that can be extended to work nicely with JSON (wouldn't matter if I'd need to parse the bytestrings, but a ready-made solution would be nice, I guess)?

Rate my setup!

I would like to know what the people at /privacy think of my current setup. Without further ado, here goes:
  • Use ProtonMail with Double Password Mode enabled
  • Use KeePass with strong password + keyfile on USB stick as replacement for 2FA
  • No cloud storage, sync, NAS etc. Use M-Discs for archiving (preserving stuff) and portable HDDs for for backup and moving data around
  • Run FreeBSD with ZFS Funtoo/Gentoo Linux
  • No Mobile Phone (If I were to use one, It would be Android with F-Droid)
  • Use ProtonVPN (addon to ProtonMail subscription)
  • Use FLOSS/FOSS software as much as possible (forced to use Windows for work)
  • Have a bash script that can nuke a hard drive by using the shred command
  • When throwing away storage devices and computers, They are physically destroyed and magnetised
  • Use Firefox with addons such as uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, HTTPS Everywhere, Self Destructing Cookies etc.
  • Use loads of about:config tweaks to enhance privacy
  • I use E2E software only such as riot.im
  • I currently use Qwant for searching
  • For subscribing to ProtonMail, I send cash in mail and add credits to my account and purchase ProtonMail+ProtonVPN via credits
  • Utilize Firefox Containers for personal, work etc.
  • I use Full Disk Encryption
I suppose my threat model is to protect myself from the NSA, FBI, NZSIS etc. I often browse reddit, the web etc. I participate in FLOSS/FOSS projects and download alot of *nix .isos for testing. AFAIK, I don't have anyone after me
EDIT 1: Findx is currently a bit shitty with the search results. Maybe check in it a few months and see how good it is. I use the "taco test". (Not mine)
EDIT 2: Found out the BSD wasn't really for me, so I'm planning to switch back to Linux. (Currently deciding weather to run Funtoo or Gentoo; I'm hooked on FreeBSD's 'ports' system)
